The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has taken a significant step in supporting higher education by granting new scholarships to a total of 4,279 students enrolled in various universities and colleges across Ghana. These scholarships cover both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, demonstrating a remarkable increase of 63% in successful applications compared to the previous year’s 2,704 recipients in 2022.
The recipients span a wide range of degree programs and fields of study. Among them, 2,951 students are pursuing diploma or degree programs, while 1,328 individuals are engaged in master’s or PhD programs, both in private and public institutions throughout Ghana. Impressively, 1,963 of the awardees, making up 46% of the total, have chosen Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related fields. On the other hand, 2,316 students, comprising 54% of the awardees, are focused on programs related to the humanities.
As of August 2, 2023, the Fund has disbursed an impressive amount of GHC 25,278,029.39 to cover the fees of the recipients. This financial support has been successfully channeled to the respective institutions where the students are pursuing their education.
It’s worth recollecting that in December 2022, GETFund initiated a call to the public, encouraging potential candidates to apply for local scholarships through an online portal designed specifically for receiving and managing scholarship applications. The response was overwhelming, with a total of 22,000 applications being submitted. This enthusiastic response led the Board of Trustees of the Fund to significantly increase the number of available scholarships, ultimately benefiting 4,279 deserving students.
